Fixed wireless broadband is a type of high-speed wireless Internet access where connections to service providers use radio signals rather than cables.  Several different forms of fixed wireless internet are available to businesses.  Fixed Wireless uses a unique spectrum that is somewhat like the old Microwave technology.  This is an excellent wireless Disaster Recovery medium because the local loop is eliminated and will remain functional even if the local central office goes offline.  This capability makes the use of fixed wireless internet a great wireless backup solution.

Fixed Wireless is also a great option for areas that lack fiber optic cable, DSL, or cable lines, as you can still enjoy access to wireless data via a fixed wireless internet service.  Fixed wireless services generally support 1-10 Mbps of network bandwidth.

Fixed wireless broadband utilizes transmission towers (sometimes called ground stations) that communicate with each other and with the subscriber's location (sometimes called customer premises).  These ground stations are maintained by Internet providers and are similar to cell phone towers.  This solution requires a line-of-site, or it can download to a local hub. 

Subscribers install transceiver equipment on their building to communicate with the fixed wireless ground stations. Transceivers consist of a small dish- or rectangular-shaped antenna and attached radio transmitters.

Many people mistakenly believe fixed wireless connections always suffer from network latency problems causing poor performance.  While high latency is an issue for satellite Internet, fixed wireless systems do not have this limitation.  Customers routinely use fixed wireless for online gaming, VoIP, wireless backup, disaster recovery, and other applications that require low network latencies.
